Calhoun-Isles-Uptown
Calhoun-Isles is one of the official communities (a grouping of several official neighborhoods) of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It contains the Uptown business district and the name “Uptown” is frequently (though somewhat incorrectly) used to refer to the entire community. The name of the community refers to its most prominent physical features, the large and publicly accessible lakes, Lake Calhoun and Lake of the Isles.
Calhoun-Isles is an affluent part of the city, and people of upper middle class means and above, including young professionals and older millionaires, inhabit the community. The Uptown district is considered by many to be the nighttime playground of the young and trendy of the Twin Cities.
“The Uptown District”

Uptown is a commercial and residential community in south Minneapolis bounded by Lake Calhoun on the west, Dupont Street on the east, 31st Street to the south and 28th Street to the north. Its hub, the intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue, is the center of a lively, upbeat business district.
Anchored by Calhoun Square, the neighborhood is dotted with coffee shops, European-style bakeries, delis and a longstanding Lund’s grocery store. Top restaurants include Chino Latino (ethnic fusion fare), Figlio (yuppified Italian) and Old Chicago (chained Italian). Work up an appetite while shopping at Music Go Round, which offers an extensive selection of new and used recordings and trying on designer duds at Twin Cities upstart, Local Motion.
Uptown is an eclectic, vibrant, business, entertainment, and constantly changing area. Restaurants, large and small, thrive in Uptown, along with movie theaters, professional offices, retail stores, coffee shops and more than 15,000 residents.
It’s the neighborhood for hipsters of all ages, and home to two of the best independent theaters in the city (The Uptown and The Lagoon). From the lakes and cafes, to the bars and restaurants, you’ll find an eclectic mix of people living counter-intuitively south of downtown … in Uptown. In addition to Calhoun Square, there’s always interesting and unique shopping cropping up along Hennepin Avenue. Originally developed as a lakeside resort, the area and has yet to lose its charm.
Uptown Art Fair
Uptown annually hosts the Uptown Art Fair, during the first full weekend of August. Local, national, and world artists converge to exhibit and sell their fine art. Art media include paintings, sculptures, clothing, pottery, jewelry, glass, and mixed media. Art cost ranges from $6 for prints and up into the hundreds or thousands of USD for paintings. The Art Fair SourceBook has rated the Uptown Art Fair highly in past years for fine art festivals.
